Maharashtra: Andheri school students develop rashes after using handwash

Plans to inculcate hand washing habit before meals among school children backfires after 60 students from Hansraj Morarji school, Andheri developed rashes on their hands on Friday. The rashes developed after students used ‘Pinky’ hand wash that was supplied to the school by the directorate of primary education under their Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan.

According Dr. Anjana Prakash, principal of the school, the department had sent bottle of 10 hand wash to their school on Thursday. “ We were asked to click pictures of the students using the hand wash. Hence on Friday we asked our students from primary section to use the hand wash before meals. Within 15 minutes of the usage students complained of itching. We then rushed the students to nearby doctor, following which we informed the officials of education department.”

As soon as the school informed the department, officials and education inspectors visited the schools and collected the bottles of hand wash. “ We have decided to take back samples from all schools to get it checked. We too are concerned about our students,” said an official from Primary education department.

Kapil Patil, legislator from teachers constituency has demanded that education department must register a police case against the manufacturer and send the samples to lab for testing. “ The samples sent to these schools have harmed the students. Though minor, it is a serious issue. The education department must immediately withdraw samples sent to other schools too. The matter should be reported to the police immediately,”Patil said.

The hand wash named “Pinky” that were supplied to schools was manufactured by Micro Care Syndicates under Khadi India of Maharashtra Rajya Khadi and GramUdyog Mandal (Mumbai) for directorate of Primary education, Pune.
