Geylang looking to attack vs.Global despite SG Cup first leg advantage

Geylang International boss Jorg Steinebrunner said his side will not "park the bus" when his side take on Filipino representatives Global FC in the second leg of the RHB Singapore Cup quarterfinal clash at the Bedok Stadium on Sunday evening.

Going into the game, the Eagles hold a slender 1-0 advantage thanks to captain Jozef Kaplan's late winner in the first leg three days ago. But Steinebrunner believes it would be dangerous to adopt a defensive strategy for the game.

"I've told the players that we are facing the same situation like the League Cup game against DPMM a few weeks ago," said Steinebrunner. "We needed a draw then, but we're not a team to sit back and simply kick the ball upfront.

"Even if you're looking to have a good defensive set-up, it's about what you've got to do when you have the ball and in attacking positions. To put a player upfront and nine players behind him to defend is not my style.

"We're not going to park the bus and play for a draw. I've never done that. If we play like that, I think I'll get a heart attack after just 20 minutes."

Meanwhile Global counterpart Leigh Manson remains confident that the 2015 United Football League (UFL) runners-up can progress into the semifinals.

"It was disappointing to lose the last game in the final five minutes, but it's only half time," said Manson. "We were dominant, especially in the first 15 minutes of the second half, but did not put the ball in the back of the net.

They then had one chance through their big forward Kaplan, who spun off my centre-back to score. That's what we were missing. So now it's about sharpening up on our finishing and looking to get two goals back.

"That is certainly achievable and players do not feel in any way that the tie's over. It's still fairly poised and one goal is all it takes to go into extra time.

"But we don't want that to happen, so we're looking to get at least two goals back and we're confident of doing that."

Both sides are free of suspension worries although Geylang will continue to miss out on the services of their injured defenders Yuki Ichikawa and Syed Thaha, who are out for a month.

However Japanese hitman Bruno Castanheira could be in line to start after making cameo appearances in the last two games.
