Celebrate Independence Day with fervour: Darul Uloom tells madrasas

“Why is someone isolating us? This is our country, our land, our place. We want to clear any misconception about our integrity towards the country. Every Muslim should celebrate Independence Day and the flag-hoisting is just one part of the celebration,” Darul Uloom Deoband Press Secretary Maulana Asharaf Usmani told The Indian Express.

Regarding the appeal he said, “All madrasas across the country hoist the tricolour. There is a misconception that madrasas don’t take part in Independence Day celebrations. We want to show the correct side of the story. Some madrasas do it jointly. We just do not feel the need to show off these celebrations.”

He added that Darul Uloom Deoband will participate in flag hoisting at Badh Ziaul Haq Chowk in front of the seminary.

“Even the Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind takes part in flag hoisting ceremony along with us,” he said. “Ulemas played a great role in the independence of the country. The Congress was ready for a partial independence, but we had rejected it. We are surprised when someone raises questions about our integrity,” he added.

Prominent clerics from Barelvis also ratified the call by Deoband. “We should rejoice on our Independence Day. It is a day for celebration. The tricolour should be hoisted on every madrasa, Muslim institutions and even on the house of every Muslim in the country,” Maulana Saleem Noori, Mufti, Manzar-e-Islam, Aala Hazrat Dargah, Bareilly said.

At Lucknow, Imam, Aishbagh Eidgah, Maulana Khalid Rasheed Farangi Mahli claimed that madrasas in Lucknow have already started Independence Day celebrations. “Today we held a quiz on Independence Day and a painting competition on theme of the national flag. Madrasa students took part and we distributed prizes,” Farangi Mahli said.

The competition was organised by Darul Uloom Nizamia Farangi Mahal at Lucknow.
