Durban - An off-duty policewoman took her own life in the bathroom of the Netcare Kingsway Hospital in Amanzimtoti on Thursday.
Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said the 34-year-old constable, who could not yet be named, had shot and killed herself with her service pistol.
“The motive is unknown. An inquest docket was opened at Amanzimtoti SAPS for investigation,” he said.
Annatjie Demetriou, general manager of the Netcare Kingsway Hospital, confirmed that a woman, who was a visitor to the hospital, died from a self-inflicted injury in a bathroom at the hospital.
She said that the incident occurred at 05:00 when most patients and visitors to the hospital "were not exposed to the tragedy".
“Counsellors were immediately made available to offer support to the woman’s family, as well as patients and staff members at the hospital.”
“On behalf of the staff and management of the hospital we wish to convey our sincere condolences to the woman’s family and her loved ones. We are not in a position to disclose any further information,” said Demetriou.
