Justice Jayant Patel, the senior-most judge in the Gujarat High Court, was named Acting Chief Justice (ACJ) after Justice V M Sahai retired on Wednesday. Justice Patel will take over as ACJ on Thursday.
Confirming the development, High Court registrar B N Karia said that a notification has been issued announcing the appointment of Justice Patel as the next ACJ. Justice Patel (59), who is from Junagadh district, was elevated as additional judge in the High Court in 2001 and was confirmed as permanent judge in 2004.
His name figures in the suo motu PIL questioning the residential plots allotted to 27 sitting and former judges.
The PIL was taken up by justice Patel’s predecessor Justice Sahai on Monday and notices were issued to all the judges.
The Supreme Court on Wednesday stayed the proceedings for four weeks and also ordered to delete the names of all the judges who have been impleaded in the petition as parties.
