Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh has assured the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) that he would jointly inspect the Indo-Bangla border in Assam with them and also speed up the process of fencing the border.

Singh also promised that a discussion involving the Centre, the state government and the AASU would be held on the Assam Accord.

Singh, who took part in a two-day seminar organised by the AASU that concluded here Wednesday, also said the BJP government was serious about implementing the various clauses of the Assam Accord meant to detect and deport Bangladeshi infiltrators who entered the state post-1971.

“The work on updation of the National Register of Citizens in Assam, monitored by the Supreme Court, is in full swing and will be completed within the set deadline of January 2016,” he said.

AASU chief adviser Samujjal Bhattacharyya said it was matter of concern that the major clauses of the Assam Accord, including those related to detecting and deporting infiltrators, had remained unimplemented even 30 years after it being signed on August 15, 1985.

Festive offer

“While over 72,000 people have been declared foreigners who illegally entered Assam in the past 30 years, only 65 are in custody, the remainder having remained missing or untraceable. This itself speaks volumes about how sincere successive governments have been in implementing the Assam Accord,” Bhattacharyya said.

The AASU has demanded a time-frame from the government to tackle infiltrators.
