KARACHI: A suspected gangster and two militants were killed during separate encounters with the Rangers and the police.

A suspected member of a Lyari gang was killed during an alleged encounter with the Rangers in a Lyari neighbourhood. The encounter took place when the Rangers troops conducted an intelligence-driven targeted raid on the suspected hideout of a Lyari gang in Ali Muhammad Muhalla, Lyari.

The Rangers spokesperson claimed that when the Rangers troops were approaching the hideout, gangsters opened fire and tried to escape, adding that in retaliation, the Rangers fired back, killing one gangster and apprehended two others. The gangster killed was later identified as Shahjahan. The Rangers spokesperson said that the gangster killed was linked with Ghaffar Zikri's group and was involved in various murders, extortion and street crimes. Weapons and ammunitions were also recovered during the raid.

Late on Tuesday night, two suspected militants were killed during an exchange of fire with the police after they attempted to attack an armoured personnel carrier (APC) at Ijtimahgah Road in Manghopir. Police officials said that at least two armed men first crashed the explosive-laden motorcycle into the APC, which was stationed at Ijtimahgah Road at a snap-checking post, however, the bomb did not explode. SHO Haroon Korai said that the armed assailants later opened fire at the police, wounding a police constable, Tanvir.

In retaliation, the police fired back and killed both suspects. Hand grenades and weapons were recovered from their possession. The officer said that the deceased militants belonged to the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan.
