Brighton & Hove Albion have signed defender Uwe Hunemeier from German Bundesliga 2 side Paderborn for an undisclosed fee.

The 29-year-old centre-back has agreed a three-year contract with the Championship club.

"I'm delighted to bring in someone of Uwe's experience," said Brighton boss Chris Hughton.

"He has played at the top level in German football and we all know how high the standards are there."

Hunemeier began his career at Borussia Dortmund and then spent three years at Energie Cottbus before joining Paderborn in 2013.

Hughton had been looking to bring in another centre-back, with Lewis Dunk and Gordon Greer the only recognised senior central defenders at his disposal.

"He has good leadership qualities and he will add a great deal to our defensive options," added Hughton.

"He is of a really good age to integrate into the squad and he has shown a great desire to join us."

Hunemeier becomes Brighton's eighth signing of the summer.
