The announcement of the prestigious Kerala state film award to 20-year-old Nazriya Nazim on Monday has stoked a controversy on social media platforms with several people slamming the decision of the government.

Many questioned why the government would choose to bestow such a huge honour on Nazriya who has donned the lead role in very few Malayalam films. They were also of the opinion that her roles in the films ‘Om Shanti Oshana’ and ‘Bangalore Days’ (for which she received the best actress award) were not worthy enough for the honour. There was a perception among movie-goers that senior actors and actresses in critically-acclaimed films were overlooked this time by the government for the award.

Memes, mocking the government decision, were awash on platforms like Facebook and Twitter.

In the above meme ridiculing Nazriya, she is seen reading the state government’s announcement of the award for her in a newspaper. But she thinks to herself that probably the award was for her decision to quit cinema. Nazriya, who married popular actor Fahadh Faazil last year, has temporarily stopped acting in films.

Many also displayed their support for popular actress Manju Warrier, suggesting that she should have received the award for the film ‘How old are you?’. However, Warrier swept aside all controversies to express support for Nazriya, saying that she deserved in the award. In a lengthy Facebook post, written in Malayalam, Warrier referred to Nasriya as her younger sister and said that just like the audience, she also enjoyed Nasriya’s performances in the two films. Warrier, who has come back to acting in films after a long sabbatical, is a recipient of the state film award for her role in ‘Ee Puzhayum Kadannu’ and the National Film Award – Special Jury for her role in ‘Kannezhuthi Pottum Thottu’.
