Ajay Devgn returns to home turf with 'Drishyam'

It was bound to happen. Like the prodigal who realises that his true calling comes from “acting”, Ajay Devgn, who sidestepped the part of the Bollywood action hero for a wee bit and took on a simpleton’s role in Drishyam, has got the required results. The film opened to a fair collection and grew steadily on word of mouth as expected.

With each passing day, the compliments that the actor received for his role as the fourth standard fail Vijay Salgaonkar, who uses his guile to outwit the entire police force, have grown in numbers.

Pleased to see this reaction and even more pleased to know that the film has stayed fairly steady over the second weekend, the two-time National Award winning actor is relieved. After all, Drishyam is home turf for him. After flexing muscle in larger-than-life masala actioners, this intelligent family thriller gave him an opportunity to revisit his acting potential.
With the general public and hardcore critics reacting to him with comments like — ‘Ajay is terrific and delivers an award-winning performance’, ‘Ajay and Tabu are top-notch’, ‘Ajay rocks’ — the actor is feeling rewarded.

It is a known fact that Ajay built his credentials with performance-oriented cinema, be it
Zakhm, The Legend Of Bhagat Singh, Gangaajal, Apaharan, Khakee or for that matter Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam — films where his acting chops were on display as opposed only to his biceps or his six-pack.
In the near and distant future, the actor intends to keep himself busy, on the one hand with a heady combination of movies like the super-successful Singham franchise and on the other hand, he is clear, he will not stray away from films like Drishyam that give him immense satisfaction.
While Ajay readies himself for his next directorial offering Shivaay and Milan Luthria’s Baadshaho, he knows like Arjun from the Mahabharata, he will keep his focus on the eye of the fish. In other words, in acting lies his true joy. So, flexing muscle is fine, but if he needs to stay on his feet through the journey of a film as he did as the hapless father in Drishyam, well, he will not stray from the path less travelled.
