Sharks win again, close in on leaders

Saraburi score a shock 1-0 victory at Suphanburi to move one point clear of the relegation zone

Chonburi’s miraculous recovery in the Thai Premier League continued yesterday as they edged Ratchaburi 2-1 to claim their fifth straight win and put themselves within a striking distance of the co-leaders.

The Sharks, whose on-field exploits have been in gross contrast with their earlier form this season, now have 36 points from 19 matches and are only two points behind joint-leaders Buriram United, Muang Thong United and Bangkok Glass who all will be in action today.

Ratchaburi, who have been a picture of inconsistency alternating wins with losses of late, were somewhat subdued and let Chonburi settle an old score.

Chonburi, last year’s runners-up, have lost only one match in the TPL this season — a 2-1 defeat at Ratchaburi.

Playing in front of a large home crowd, Chonburi went ahead in the 20th minute when South Korean defender Cho Byung-Kuk found the net.

Chonburi kept attacking the Dragons and the lead was doubled by Watthanapong Tabutda in the 84th.

Genki Nagasato pulled one back for Ratchaburi in injury time but it was never going to kick start a comeback for the visitors and it didn’t.

Meanwhile, struggling Saraburi scored a rare win to upset sixth-ranked Suphanburi 1-0 in an away game.

Urikhob Sadney netted the winner for Saraburi in the fourth minute.

With the win, Saraburi moved out of the relegation zone with 14 points from 19 games.

Suphanburi squandered their chance to surge ahead and stay put in tied fifth place with Bangkok United with 31 points.

In today’s action, Muang Thong United host Bangkok Glass, while champions Buriram United go to Si Sa Ket in a northeastern derby.
