FX has given a series pickup to “Better Things,” a comedy from “Louie” vets Louis C.K. and Pamela Adlon, while FXX has ordered the animated series “Cassius and Clay.”
FX’s animated comedy “Archer” is also moving to FXX for its seventh season next year, where it will run in tandem with the female buddy comedy “Cassius and Clay.” FX Networks announced the orders as part of its presentation Friday at the Television Critics Assn. press tour at the Beverly Hilton.
“Better Things,” which has a 10-episode order, revolves around the life of a single mother and working actress who is struggling to raise three daughters. Adlon stars and co-created the series with C.K. for his Pig Newton production banner and FX Prods. C.K. directed the pilot.
“Pamela is one of the sharpest and most endearing actresses working in television today and we are thrilled she has joined forces with Louis to create a series that is raw, personal and incredibly funny,” said Eric Schrier, president of original programming at FX Networks and FX Prods.
Adlon said she was grateful for the chance to “explore the real and funny truths of being a single working mom.” She’s nommed this year for an Emmy as guest actress for her work on “Louie.”

“Better Things” co-stars Mikey Madison, Riley Watson, and Olivia Edward as Adlon’s daughters. C.K. and Adlon exec produce alongside Blair Breard, Dave Becky and 3 Arts Entertainment.
“Cassius and Clay” is billed as a female buddy comedy set in the post-apocalyptic South. Kaitlin Olson, of FX’s long-running “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” and Lake Bell voice the title characters.
“Tearing through the Smoky Mountains, Cassius and Clay don’t just survive the end of the world – they thrive on it with a pack of misfits who persevere against all odds in this Southern-fried apocalypse,” said Nick Grad, president of original programming for FX Networks and FX Prods.
“Archer” exec producer Adam Reed is writing the series and exec producing with Megan Ganz (“Modern Family”). Matt Thompson and Reed’s Floyd County Prods. banner are also exec producing for FX Prods. Susan Sarandon, Jeffrey Tambor, JB Smoove, Kevin Michael Richardson, Stephen Root, Katy Mixon and Robert Patrick are also in the voice cast.
