Three death row prisoners hanged in Punjab

Two were hanged in Lahore's Kot Lakhpat Jail, while third was executed in Gujranwala Central Jail

GUJRANWALA/LAHORE: Three death row convicts were hanged early Thursday morning in jails across Punjab, Express News reported.

Murder convicts Inamullah and Shafaqat were hanged in Lahore's Kot Lakhpat jail for committing murders in 1996 in Shadrah and Shaikupura, respectively.

Meanwhile, the third murder convict, Tariq, was hanged in Gunjranwala Central Jail amid high security for murdering his niece.

Earlier on Wednesday, authorities stayed the execution of a death row prisoner Muhammad Anwar, who was to be hanged in Gujranwala Central Jail.

The execution of death row prisoners have been resumed a little over a month after the practice was suspended out of respect for the fasting month of Ramazan.

Since the moratorium on executions was lifted, in the aftermath of the Army Public School, Peshawar, terrorist attack, over 180 death row prisoners have been hanged in the country – 23 of them had been convicted of terrorism.
