Dubliner becomes winner of Channel 4's Countdown

A Dublin man has won Channel 4’s gameshow Countdown.

Mark Murray (36) won the Richard Whiteley Memorial Trophy today after scoring 105 points on the popular gameshow.

Mr Murray, who lives in the UK, opened the show impressively with the nine-letter word ‘elongates’.

He finished well ahead of his opponent who earned just 70 points in comparison.

Mark, who works for UK firm Ovo Energy, earned this year's highest score of 120 points during a show in mid-April.

He became an 'Octochamp' after notching up eight consecutive wins.

Host Nick Hewer, lexicographer Susie Dent, and comedian Jon Culshaw were impressed by the Blanchardstown man’s performance.

They gave their “credit and respect” to the Dubliner.

The delighted contestant won a trophy, a laptop and the coveted 20-volume Oxford English Dictionary.
