August 04, 2015 12:00 am | Updated March 29, 2016 01:01 pm IST - SALEM:

The Federation of Tamil Nadu Agriculturists Associations urged the State government to initiate enquiry by a sitting High Court Judge into the circumstances that led to the tragic death of Gandhian Sasi Perumal in Marthandam.

Late Sasi Perumal has been tirelessly fighting for total prohibition in the State for a very long time. The police and the revenue officials allowed him to stay atop the tower under hot sun for about five hours, under the guise of holding negotiations, S. Nallasamy, secretary of the Federation told presspersons here on Saturday.

With better strategy and quick action, the officials could have brought down Sasi Perumal and saved his life, he said.

The government should order enquiry by High Court sitting Judge to bring the facts that led to his death to light, he said.

Staff Reporter adds from Namakkal Stating that Tasmac outlets should not be closed as it was helping the labourers to “relax,” Soundaraj (50) a daily labourer, climbed the mobile phone tower in Lakshmi Nagar in Pallipalayam here on Monday evening. The police tried to talk him out of the protest but he refused to relent.

Later, Fire and Rescue Services personnel climbed the tower and brought him down safely after two hours. He was taken to the hospital.
