Maruti Manpade, president of the Karnataka Prantha Raitha Sangha, has said that the All-India Kisan Sabha will stage a two-day dharna in New Delhi from August 10. Families of farmers who committed suicide will participate.
Mr. Manpade said on Monday that members of 25 families from State will participate.
He said that the implementation of the recommendations of the M.S. Swaminathan commission report would be the only solution to the present problems encountered by farmers. Mr. Manpade pointed out that the Bharatiya Janata Party and the members of the National Democratic Alliance in their manifestos ahead of the Lok Sabha elections had promised to implement it in toto.
Mr. Manpade said that the United Progressive Alliance government, which had accepted the recommendations of the commission, had failed to implement it.
Criticising the government for not deputing a study team to visit the drought-hit areas in the State, he demanded that the Centre pay a minimum of Rs. 10,000 per acre as compensation and relief to the farmers who were hit by the drought and failure of crops.
He also demanded that the State government declare 105 taluks in the State which received less or no rainfall as drought hit and take up drought relief works.
