Asha Kiran residents win at Special Olympics

: A 10-member contingent sent by Asha Kiran, a home for specially-abled people, to the Special Olympics World Summer Games at Los Angeles has won 10 medals, including three gold and seven bronze medals, in six events.

Phoolan Devi, 17, won gold medal for India in power-lifting. She also won three bronze medals in power-lifting (all lifts, dead-lift and squat lift). Matru (39), a differently-abled contestant, won gold in the team event of softball. He has won about 100 awards in sports events such as athletics, badminton, kho-kho, handball and softball.

Patto, another resident at the facility, won a gold medal in the 800-metre race. She has won about 400 awards in events such as bocce, athletics, table tennis, handball and softball. The bronze medallists include Sonakshi (15), Seema (27) and Upender (22).

“Sportsperson from Asha Kiran have excelled in various sports and athletics and have won about 900 awards in the last three years, despite very scanty facilities in the complex,” a statement from the Delhi government read.
