Elixir Aircraft, a French aviation start-up, recently selected Dassault Systèmes’ Engineered to Fly prepackaged industry solution—part of the vendor’s 3DEXPERIENCE product development software platform—to develop the industry’s first aircraft designed using cloud-based applications. Cloud product development software—for product design, engineering, etc.—will be used for the aviation manufacturer’s high-performing two-seater airplane, crafted to appeal to the passenger experience with a unique wing structure, comfort, and gains in payload, safety, and costs. The aircraft’s first flight is expected to take place in mid-2016.

Based on Dassault Systèmes’ aforementioned 3DEXPERIENCE platform, Engineered to Fly is specifically tailored for small- and medium-sized aerospace and defense (A&D) suppliers. The vendor’s product development software platform integrates its latest product lifecycle management (PLM), computer-aided design (CAD), and other engineering technologies to manage the secure and social aircraft design and documentation process. Since the platform’s cloud project structure is delivered "out of the box" with full IT support, Elixir Aircraft can accelerate its project completion with minimal IT investment.

Through these capabilities, Dassault Systèmes is seriously challenging Autodesk’s primacy in the cloud PLM, simulation, computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), and CAD software market. As stated in our 2015 predictions, cloud PLM and CAD software is gaining ground, and prospective users should be aware of their viable on-premise and cloud deployment choices.

Within the latest V6 generation, Dassault Systèmes’ flagship PLM offering ENOVIA is already a true cloud software solution. The flagship CAD offering CATIA’s server side is on the cloud but the client side still requires installation of the desktop software for a rich product design user experience. It will be interesting to watch how the competition and PLM-CAD vendor offerings continue to develop.
