FDA finds Haldiram samples safe

About a month ago, minister of state, FDA, Varsha Gaikwad, had asked FDA commissioner Harshdeep Kamble to test Haldiram packets after a US FDA official notice banned the product in America.

Around 20 samples of Haldiram tested by the state Food and Drug Administration (FDA) from Nagpur and Mumbai were labelled safe for consumption after quantity of lead was found within permissible limits in the packets of the Nagpur based company.

Haldiram is a sweet and snacks manufacturing company that also exports its products to other countries.

“We collected various samples such as sev, bhujia, moong dal and papadi chat after receiving a request from the government,” said Kamble.

Over a month ago, US FDA had detected salmonella bacteria presence in the ready to eat packets of Haldiram apart from high lead content. While Maharashtra FDA conducted tests to check for the same bacteria along with another bacteria, E-coli, all tests came negative.

Festive offer

The Haldiram row follows recent Maggi ban in India which had been found having excessive lead quantities. The permissible limit for lead is 2.5 parts per million (ppm).

According to FDA, Haldiram samples had less than 2.5 ppm lead which brings it under the safe category of consumption.
