TUNIS, Tunisia -- The lawyers for Muammar Gadhafi's last prime minister are calling for international action to save their client from execution.

The lawyers said the trial and July 28 death sentence for Baghdadi al-Mahmoudi -- as well as Gadhafi's son Seif al-Islam and seven other former regime officials -- were politically motivated. They have vowed to appeal the sentence to the Supreme Court; it was not clear whether an execution date had been set.

The lawyers were also preparing suits against Tunisian officials, including former Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali, involved in al-Mahmoudi's extradition to Libya in 2012.

Tunisia's president at that time had not approved the extradition.

U.S.-based Human Rights Watch said the trial was "undermined by serious due process violations." Libya has slid into chaos since the Gadhafi's overthrow and killing.
