Rolling Stone names Jason Fine as new editor, replacing Will Dana

Rolling Stone named Jason Fine as its new editor.

Rolling Stone has a new editor.

Wenner Media, its parent company, named Jason Fine as managing editor of Rolling Stone Monday, hoping to restore leadership at the magazine that has been beleaguered by a discredited story about the University of Virginia.

Fine is familiar with Rolling Stone. Prior to becoming the editor of Men’s Journal in 2010, he was an executive editor of Rolling Stone for about two years. He joined Rolling Stone as an associate editor in 1997.

Fine replaces Will Dana, who stepped down last month following the magazine's retraction of a December 2014 article Dana edited. "A rape on campus," reported and written by Sabrina Rubin Erdely, chronicled a story about "Jackie," who said she experienced a brutal gang rape at the hands of University of Virginia fraternity members.

Soon after the story was published, the university suspended fraternity activities and launched its own investigation. But several news organizations, including The Washington Post, began to raise questions about Erdely's reporting. Rolling Stone commissioned the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism to conduct an investigation of the story, and the school subsequently issued a scathing report about the reportorial shortcomings in the story.

The magazine is facing lawsuits, including one from past members of the fraternity.

Fine will continue to work as editorial director of Men's Journal. Mark Healy has been named to replace Fine as editor of Men’s Journal, effective immediately. Healy will report to Fine.
