She talks about her choice of films, animal rights and politics in a candid chat

Trisha Krishnan needs no introduction. An established actress in southern filmdom with several blockbusters to her credit, she has successfully survived in the industry for over a decade. Trisha credits her choice of films for her long innings. “I’ve done 48 films so far and I’m proud of every film. Some films worked and some didn’t, but I don’t regret being part of any project.

Even if someone offers me one of these films again, I’d happily accept it,” Trisha, whose 48th film Sakalakala Vallavan released in cinemas on Friday, told Mirror, and added that her ability to not pay heed to things that’d bother her also helped her to sustain in a very competitive industry. “My strength is that I’m very thick-skinned. It’s important to be very strong because there are so many things that could affect your morale in the industry”.

Presently, she has two important projects; a film each with filmmaker Sundar C and Kamal Haasan. One of these two films will mark her 50th project. “I’m not sure if it will be Sundar sir’s Aranmanai 2 or Kamal sir’s Thoongaavanam. It depends on which film releases first. 90 percent of shooting on both the projects has already been completed,” she said.

Thoongaavanam is Trisha’s second film with Haasan after Manmadhan Ambu. “I’m doing the kind of character I haven’t done before. I sport a very different look. It’s a very realistic film and when you watch it, you realise nobody has acted in it because we’re living the characters. It’s an honour to be working with Kamal sir again,” she said, and added that despite several opportunities to work with filmmaker Sundar C, she has teamed up with him for the first time in Aranmanai 2, a sequel to last year’s blockbuster Aranmanai.

“I’ve known Sundar sir and his wife Khushboo ma’am for so many years. But our plans to work together never materialized into a project. I’m equally excited about Aranmanai 2 because it’s my first attempt at the horror-comedy genre, which is now highly popular and successful worldwide”.

Trisha is one of the few actresses to have worked with all the popular Telugu and Tamil stars. She began her career with Suriya in Mounam Pesiyadhe and went on to work with Ajith, Vijay, Mahesh Babu, Ravi Teja, Chiranjeevi, Venkatesh and Balakrishna among others over the years. But she hasn’t been lucky enough to work with superstar Rajinikanth. Ask her why, and she says with a smile, “I think this question needs to be asked to Rajini sir. He should be asked why he doesn’t want to work with me. I’ve always wished to work with him. I mean, who doesn’t.”

For Trisha, 2015 began with a bang. On January 23, she got engaged to entrepreneur-producer Varun Manian, whom she was dating for a while. Couple of weeks later, her film Yennai Arindhaal with filmmaker Gautham Vasudev Menon released and went on to become highly successful. Over the course of the next few months, things went haywire in her life. In May, Trisha announced that she had called off her engagement with Varun, much to the surprise of her fans and well-wishers. When asked about the reason, she said: “I don’t want to talk about it as it involves two families. It would be very insensitive on my part if I talk about it in public”. Although she’s in no hurry to get married, she hasn’t ruled out the option completely. “There shouldn’t be any time constraint on marriage. When I find the right person and happen to fall in love, I’ll definitely get married,” she said.

Will she move in with the person she falls in love with? “Live-in relationship is every individual’s choice. If two persons and their respective families are fine with the idea of living together, I really don’t think there should be any problem. I strongly feel it’s better to be in a live-in relationship and part ways if things don’t work out than get married and get divorced if things fall apart,” she added.

When not busy with acting commitments, she likes to voice her opinion for the freedom of animals. An ardent animal lover, Trisha works closely with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). She’s extremely hurt with the recent incident of culling of dogs in Kerala. “It’s really unfair to kill dogs because they’re aggressive and bit a few people. We live in a society filled with nasty people as well. Do we kill them as well? Dogs should be sterilized, but not killed,” she said. She was rumoured to be interested in politics. Rubbishing the claims, she said: “Politics is not bad. But you need to be really prepared to be involved. I’m not sure what I wish to do ten or twenty years from now. I’m quite ignorant about politics, so I don’t think I aspire to be a politician,” she signed off.
