BEIJING: Chinese police is investigating two distillers after it found preliminary evidence that they had laced thousands of bottles of liquor with Viagra before labeling them as spirits with "health preserving qualities".
Investigators in China's Guangxi region found several packets of white powder called Sildenafil, which is better known as the anti-impotency drug Viagra.

The Food and Drug Administration in Liuzhao city, where the distillers are located, said that the powder was added to three different types of 'baijiu' - a strong, clear spirit that is the most popular drink in China.
The police seized over 5,300 bottles of alcohol that are suspected to be laced with Viagra. The police said the seized bottles are worth $113,000 indicating the high price being charged for the "health spirits".
Local officials said the Viagra laced liquor could be dangerous if consumed in large proportion. Doctors recommend that adults requiring prescription should take only one dose of Viagra a day, with a lower dose for those over the age of 65.
The latest development adds to the food adulteration problem in China. Chinese customs officials seized over 100,000 tons of 40-year old smuggled meat worth more than $480 million. Police arrested 21 criminal gangs in connection with the case.
China earlier saw a massive scandal with dairies adding melamine, a chemical used in plastic industry, to give the impression of additional cream in milk.
