PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Two Rhode Island towns are receiving $410,000 in federal grants to improve maritime security and protect port infrastructure.

The Providence Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1gEk3kB0 ) the grants were announced by three of Rhode Island’s members of Congress.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security awarded the grants through a port security program designed to help communities increase risk management, enhance domain awareness, conduct training and expand port recovery capabilities.



The Cranston Fire Department will receive about $26,000 to train firefighters to become credentialed instructors of the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators’ Boat Operations and Training Program.

Narragansett will receive $24,000 for the same training and $360,000 to buy a fire and rescue boat with specialized equipment. Machinery on the boat can detect chemicals, biological substances and explosive devices
