PSG captain Thiago Silva says that Angel Di Maria will be making a step-up by joining the Ligue 1 outfit.

The Argentina international touched down in Qatar late on Sunday night and posed for photos with excited fans at the airport in the country's capital.

Di Maria is expected to undergo tests at the Aspire Academy on Monday.

If there are no hiccups, Di Maria could complete his transfer from Manchester United to PSG before the end of the day.

The 27-year-old was given permission to fly to Qatar for talks with PSG officials after United agreed a €63m fee with the French champions for the midfielder.

United signed Di Maria from Real Madrid for £59.7m last summer, but after an encouraging start his form dipped drastically and he only started one of the final 10 games of last season.

Silva has welcomed the signing and added that there is a gulf in class between the Red Devils and PSG.

"People now need to respect PSG as one of the big clubs in Europe," Silva said. "Real Madrid and Barcelona are probably on another level, but after that if you join PSG you are you probably taking a step up."

PSG knocked out Chelsea on their way to the Champions League semi-finals last season, a fact not lost on Silva.

"We went further than any English clubs in Europe last year," he added.
