Two boys drowned in Thane's Upvan lake after celebrating Friendship's Day on Sunday evening at around 6.30pm.

24-year-olds Lokesh Naik and Yogesh Jagtap were residents of Kini Nagar, Wagle estate and had gone to Thane's Upvan lake with their friends for celebrating Friendship's Day. "They were probably drinking and couldn't swim after getting into the water," said Santosh Kadam, DMO, Regional Disaster Management Control. When they couldn't locate them, their friends panicked and called in the fire brigade, which later bought in Regional Disaster Management Control officers.

Two scuba divers, 52-year-old Vijay Patwardhan and his 26-year old son Kamlesh Patwardhan, eventually helped in fishing out the bodies. "It is always difficult to carry out a search operation in lakes as visibility is zero. We commenced our operation at 7.45pm and managed to locate the bodies in 15 minutes," said Vijay.

Thane's Vartak Nagar police station registered a case of ADR, but no complaint was registered. Meanwhile, the Thane Municipal Corporation will hold a meeting on Tuesday in order to take precautionary measures. The lake was also visited by TMC commissioner Sanjay Jaiswal and other concerned officials.
