KOLKATA: Steel Authority of India’s newly expanded and modernised IISCO Steel Plant (ISP) at Burnpur, dispatched its first export consignment last week. The consignment is bound for Nepal and will be utilised for urgent rehabilitation work in that country following the series of massive earthquakes that hit the Himalayan nation in April this year.

Comprising 45 wagons of steel blooms adding up to 2,764 tonnes the consignment was flagged off from the West Yard in ISP. This is the first of the total order comprising two rakes adding up to 5,500 tonnes. The second export consignment will be dispatched in first week of August, a statement issued by ISP said. The blooms will be used for rolling out quake-resistant TMT bars, which are wi9dely used in building and construction activity.

Following its recent commissioning, the plant has not only tripled its hot metal capacity from 0.85 to 2.9 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) but also ushered in a new era of green and high quality steel making. Soon after the stabilization of its new and modernized units, ISP is fast catering to the needs of both national and international customers with its quality products. Incidentally, SAIL had earlier donated around 50 tonnes of GC (galvanised corrugated) sheets to Nepal for rehabilitation work through Indian embassy in Kathmandu.
