Japan Seeking Explanation Over Alleged U.S. Spying

Japanese government has said that it is seeking an explanation from the US Government over Wikileaks revlation that NSA spied on Japanese Cabinet, banks and companies such as Mitsubishi.

"We are strongly asking U.S. Director of National Intelligence (James) Clapper to check the facts," Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told journalists Monday.

If the alleged spying was true, Japan, as an ally of the United States, would find it "extremely regrettable," according to Suga.

The international whistle-blowing website Wikileaks Friday published 'top secret' documents from the US National Security Agency, which alleges that US has been spying 35 Top Secret targets in Japan, dubbed 'Target Tokyo', which also included intercepts relating to US-Japan relations, trade negotiations and sensitive climate change strategy.

Wikileaks said the leaked NSA reports "demonstrate the depth of US surveillance of the Japanese government, indicating that intelligence was gathered and processed from numerous Japanese government ministries and offices."
