Jyoti Sachdev Iyer’s personal style is like her creations: understated, yet elegant. “I believe less is more. The more subtle you are, the more elegant you are, and the more you stand out in a crowd.” Her latest collection, Twists and Twirls ,available at Ffolio, is primarily Indian wear, including anarkalis and drape saris, and some Western wear, essentially for cocktail wear. “I have played around with texturing the fabric, adding a little to the outfit. For my material I have used georgettes, slub chanderis and lycra.”
Each creation is unique. The colours lend a classic, sophisticated look to the clothes.
“There are pastel shades, peaches, ivories and greys,” says Jyoti as she holds up to show her well-crafted creations. “The collection is meant for women anywhere between 20 and 60 years. What matters is how well-informed a woman is and how comfortable she is with her mind and body.”
Jyoti says her ideas for creations depend on the season, inspiration and her mood. She prefers her designs to be regal and subtle. She studied at the National Institute of Fashion Technology, Delhi and began her career as a fashion designer in 1998. “I started a small studio in Delhi before I shifted to Bengaluru, where I lived for some years. Three years ago, I moved back to Kolkata. But I keep coming back here every month, and yes, I do miss the city.”
She contends that fashion has undergone a change over the years. “Every couple of years, fashion changes drastically. The younger generation is always looking for something new and exciting. So as a designer you have to keep pushing your edge a little bit.”
The collection is priced between Rs. 20,000 and Rs. 75,000, and is available at Ffolio, shop number 1, Embassy Chambers, 5, Vittal Mallya Road. For details call 2221 8142.
