FAIRFIELD, Conn. (AP) - Authorities say two girls are in critical condition after they were pulled unconscious from the water near Fairfield.

A boater found the girls shortly after 4:30 p.m. Sunday and notified emergency personnel. They were taken to Bridgeport Hospital for treatment.

Authorities did not release the girls’ names, ages or other details of the incident. A statement from the Fairfield Fire Department says the girls were rescued “after some type of accident.”

Fairfield Assistant Fire Chief Scott Bisson credited the speed and effectiveness of medical care to “the quick actions of the private boaters” who pulled the girls from the water.

An investigation by Fairfield police is continuing.
