Cooks Islanders mark 50th anniversary of independence in style(Richard Ewart)

The Cook Islands 50th anniversary of self-government celebrations are in full swing going into the second week of festivities.

Celebrations leading up to Constitution Day on August 4 began with an opening ceremony attended by thousands, and a float parade, before each island group took to the stage to perform each night at the National Auditorium, sharing their distinct culture through song and dance.

Cook Islands journalist Helen Greig says it has been no small effort getting people onto Rarotonga for the events, with Cook Islanders travelling from all across the region to take part.
