A day after Chief Minister and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) general secretary Jayalalithaa announced financial assistance for ailing folk artiste and actor ‘Paravai’ Muniyammal, party leaders called on her at a private hospital in the city and handed over a cheque for Rs. 6 lakh on Sunday.

Minister for Cooperation ‘Sellur’ K. Raju said that MGR Trust would bear her medical expenses and give her a monthly assistance of Rs. 6,000 henceforth.

Mayor V.V. Rajan Chellappa and Member of Parliament from Madurai R. Gopalakrishnan accompanied him.

One of the family members of ‘Paravai’ Muniyammal said that she was admitted to the hospital five days back and she was likely to be discharged in the next few days. She had breathlessness and palpitations owing to a heart problem.

She is living in penury as her health condition prevented her from working for the last 11 months. Following a report in a weekly about her condition, help began to pour in. Public became aware of the issue through online campaigns.
