The Communist Party of India (CPI) has urged Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to bring an ordinance to implement nation-wide prohibition.
CPI leader D. Pandian told reporters here on Sunday that BJP Leader and Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan, who had called upon the Tamil Nadu Government to implement prohibition following the death of Gandhian Sasi Perumal, should persuade Prime Minister Narendra Modi to bring this ordinance.
Denouncing the police for terming the death as “suicide,” he also called for a probe to ascertain how the activist was allowed to climb a mobile tower despite having given advance information of the protest. He also questioned the delay of five hours to bring him down.
Mr. Pandian said that the Left parties would back the call for a closing of all shops on August 4 to press for prohibition. Further, they would join hands with farmers associations to protest Karnataka government’s move to build check dams across Cauvery at Mekadatu.
He urged the State and Central Governments to include lectures of former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam in school and college curriculum. Further, he wanted the last Parliamentary address of B.R. Ambedkar to be the first lesson in colleges.
The veteran leader also called upon the Modi Government to sack Union Ministers accused of involvement in irregularities such as the Lalit Modi affair and Vyapam scam. He noted that BJP had made similar demands while it was in the Opposition.
Further, he also accused the ruling party of packing administrative and judicial posts with people trained in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). R. Mutharasan, CPI State secretary, was also present.
