It all began on June 20 when Dhruvkishen Khatri, who had gone to buy designer jewellery for reputed gold shops in Bengaluru from Gold Bazaar in Andhra Pradesh, was returning to the city in an APSRTC bus.
Little did he know that he was being followed by Rajesh, a software engineer. As soon as Mr. Khatri alighted at Tank Bund Road in Majestic area with a suitcase full of jewels, a gang of five confronted him posing as police officers and bundled him into their SUV on the pretext of questioning him.
The gang then reached an isolated place in Krishnagiri district of Tamil Nadu where Mr. Khatri was beaten up, tortured and forced to get off the vehicle. They snatched his mobile phone and his jewellery, and gave him Rs. 500 to return to Bengaluru, before speeding away.
Since Chennai-based rowdy-sheeter Mohammed Rafi was familiar with the police, he had come in contact with S. Ravichandra, a dismissed sub-inspector from the Chennai Crime Branch, who was dismissed from service on the charge of robbery and anti-social activities. He became part of the gang after his dismissal.
The other arrested are A. Marishan, M. Gokul Prasad, Ramesh P., S. Nagamani, and Saabir Saadiq, who have been remanded in judicial custody.
The police have recovered jewellery worth Rs. 12 lakh and cash of Rs. 2.9 lakh.
The robbers gave Khatri Rs. 500 to return to Bengaluru
