Call for fight against ‘saffronisation’

Left, Congress should join hands at national level, says RSP

Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) general secretary T.J. Chandrachoodan has called on the Left parties in the country to join forces with the Congress at the national level to resist the Sangh Parivar’s attempts to ‘saffronise’ the nation.

In his inaugural address at the district conference of the RSP here on Sunday, Prof. Chandrachoodan said that while the political situation in the country warranted a united intervention of the Left to wage a ‘freedom struggle’ against the Narendra Modi government’s attempt to carry out Sangh Parivar agenda, the Left parties remained afflicted by intra-party and inter-party differences.

Though the Congress was politically weakened, the RSP’s stand was that the Left parties should forge friendship with that party in the fight against communalism. The Sangh Parivar was trying for the regimentation of society, Prof. Chandrachoodan said, adding that even cultural institutions were not spared.

Reiterating his sharp attack on the Communist Party of India (Marxist) leadership in the State, he said that the party, helming the Left Democratic Front (LDF), was dividing the coalition’s constituents. Singling out CPI(M) leader Pinarayi Vijayan for attack, he said that the former CPI(M) State secretary had only contempt for others, including those within his party. There was a time when the Left movement was led by greats such as E.M.S. Namboodiripad and E.K. Nayanar. Now the CPI(M) was a skeleton without soul.

In coalition politics, every party reserved its right to demand what it felt it deserved, he said, referring to his party’s staking claim in the United Democratic Front (UDF) for the position of the Deputy Speakership. The RSP wanted it to be accorded consideration it deserved in the UDF and was not asking for any favours, he said.

RSP State secretariat member K. Abdul Khader presided. Party State secretary A.A. Azeez and district secretary Illikkal Agasthy were also present at the inaugural session.
