My approved F1 visa has two stars on it. What do these stars represent?

Dinesh Sunny

Visas and passports include many security and quality control features. The stars are one of those features.

My wife and I renewed our passports recently. In both our new passports, our surnames are printed exactly as in our old passports. The spaces left for the names of father, mother and spouse on the last page were printed in reverse order. Will this cause any problem during our visa interviews?

D. Manohar Rao

For the interview, consistency is most important for your name—the name given in your passports must match the name given in your visa applications. During the interview, the adjudicating officer will look at the totality of circumstances to determine whether an applicant is credible. The printing of your parent’s name in your passport likely will not be of concern.

I transferred from Midwestern State University to Bowie State University. My F1 visa was stamped with the SEVIS number of Midwestern State University. I was given a new SEVIS number at Bowie State University after my transfer. I had paid a SEVIS fees for my new school and the old SEVIS number got terminated. Do I have to get my visa stamped with the new SEVIS number?

Naveen

Students are required to apply for a new visa if there is a change in their SEVIS number, programme, or university. You will need to re-interview if you decide to leave the U.S. during your course of study.

My daughter returned from the U.S. in November 2014 before her visa expired. My son-in-law, who is working in the U.S., has sent an I-797 form and a copy of his last visa to help my daughter apply for her H4 visa. Will these documents be sufficient for my daughter to apply for a H4 visa? Can you provide us the list of documents required to apply for a H4 visa?

P. Ramchander Rao

We recommend that non-immigrant visa applicants review the document requirements found on our website: http://hyderabad.

My U.S. passport will expire in January 2016. I plan to travel to Hyderabad soon. Can I renew my passport at the U.S. Consulate General in Hyderabad?

Vinod

You can renew your U.S. passport at any U.S. Consulate or the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi. How early can a student enter the U.S. after getting an F1 visa?

Shehla

Students cannot enter the U.S. more than 30 days prior to the start date listed on your I-20.
