Two injured in

head-on collision

Drivers of a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) bus and a sand-laden lorry were seriously injured after the two vehicles had a head-on collision near Basingapuram on Alanganallur Road on Sunday morning.

Police said that the bus was proceeding towards A. Kovilpatti near Alanganallur from Periyar Bus stand while the lorry was coming to Madurai from Tiruchi.

The accident took place around 5.40 a.m. The impact was such that the right portion of the bus was damaged upto two rows of seats.

Bus driver Jayakumar suffered head injuries and fracture on a leg. Lorry driver S. Shanmugam of Tiruchi suffered critical injuries. Both were admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of Government Rajaji hospital. Besides, four passengers, bus conductor and another TNSTC employee have been injured.

Villagers said sand-laden lorries plying between Tiruchi and Madurai took the Natham route to avoid getting caught by officials for various violations. They over-speed in their anxiety to reach Madurai early, leading to accidents.

Very recently, a sand-laden lorry fatally knocked down a child near Alagarkoil.
