The State Health Minister, C. Laxma Reddy, said on Sunday that some of the facilities in the old building of Osmania General Hospital (OGH) will be moved to Petlaburj Maternity Hospital.

The Health Minister spoke at a media gathering in Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), organised to discuss the success of the institute’s first liver transplant that happened on Saturday.

Organ donation

A 61-year old patient at NIMS received the liver of 20-year-old P. Abhijit, who was declared brain dead on July 31, a day after sustaining grievous injuries in a car accident.

The Minister lauded the efforts of the doctors who performed the transplant and the kindness of the donor’s family for consenting to donate the organs.

When asked about the fate of the hospital, Mr. Reddy said that the government’s priority is to first shift the medical wings in the old building without hassling patients and healthcare professionals, the State government would then mull about what can be done to the building, the Minister said.

He also took a dig at the Congress for not conserving the building when in power.

He said that two floors of Petlaburj which are currently unoccupied will be used to locate the facilities moved out of OGH.

Meanwhile on Sunday, a team of conservation architects, town planning experts and heritage conservation activists inspected the old building of the hospital under the aegis of Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH). Hyderabad chapter’s convener P. Anuradha Reddy said that the team would make public on Monday some of its findings and a detailed report would soon be released.
