CPI (M) to step up stir for special status

Coinciding with its nationwide campaign till August 14, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) will spearhead stir to press for special category state status to Andhra Pradesh and special package for backward areas in the State.

Kick-starting the party’s campaign here on Sunday night, its party central secretariat member V. Srinivasa Rao told the party cadre: “We should expose the BJP-TDP combine, the twin-culprits in the eyes of people and ensure that leaders of both parties enter the villages only after ensuring justice for the State struggling to cope with bifurcation blues.”

The party will fight for Bundlekhand-like special package for Prakasam district, which had been left out by the Centre at the time of the State’s bifurcation. People were totally dissatisfied with the performance of the ruling

BJP-TDP combine both at the Centre and in the State as they had failed to live up the expectations of the people.

Both the governments should realise that growth could not be accelerated by rolling out a red-carpet to multinational companies, he said, adding that taking a cue from China purchasing power of common people should be increased to spur growth in the country.

Singapore model of development was unsuited to agrarian Andhra Pradesh, he said and wanted the State Government to create jobs for rural youth in smaller towns and villages by providing best of infrastructure in their localities.

Over 10,000 farmers had committed suicide pointing to the serious agrarian crisis in the country as both the Governments were unable to ensure a remunerative price for their produce.

Even for those crops regulated by the Centre, it was unable to ensure a decent returns for farmers, he said.
