Corporation administration has warned that the stringent action would be taken against the residents if they did not cooperate with the mosquito control drives taken up to combat diseases like dengue.
Official sources said the Corporation constituted teams would be visiting the houses in three phases to ensure that all cans/tanks which were used to store water had been covered properly.
This was essential to prevent mosquito breeding as the Aedes Aegypti mosquito that spreads dengue virus breeds in pure water, added the officials.
The residents were asked to remove all plastic cups, tyres and other materials that could hold clean water.
According to Corporation officials, the residents will be warned first if the violations were noticed and then the water connection would be disconnected apart from taking up further actions as per various laws. While welcoming the Corporation decision for stricter action, activists like P. Somasudaram, secretary of Tirupur Consumer Voice, pointed out that residents alone were not sole section of society who were responsible for mosquito breeding.
“In various government offices too, one can see cups and unused bins lying scattered. Moreover, the authorities need to be more sincere in their drive against usage of plastic cups and should remove tyres lying in public places,” Mr. Somasundaram said.
