Bennett Jackson enters Giants' unsettled safety picture

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- After two days of Cooper Taylor running with the first team at safety alongside rookie Landon Collins, the New York Giants switched things up for Sunday's practice. Taylor was bumped down to the second team and Bennett Jackson, the 2014 sixth-round pick who came out of college as a cornerback and missed his rookie season due to injury, was starting alongside Collins at safety.

"Guys are going to rotate," Giants coach Tom Coughlin said by way of explanation, but he also had positive things to say about Jackson and the work he has done in changing positions this offseason.

"He seems to be doing OK," Coughlin said. "There's a guy coming off an injury, too. Nobody talks about him much, but he's been out there and done a pretty good job."

Collins looks likely to end up starting as a rookie at one of the safety spots, but the other one is totally wide open. Nat Berhe, who was running with Taylor on the second team Sunday, is a factor and likely to get first-team reps before long. Newly signed veteran Jeromy Miles could get in the mix as well. But the idea of a converted corner and his coverage skills as a potential solution on the back end is an interesting one, and Jackson is definitely part of the mix.

"There's a lot to learn," Coughlin said. "The safeties have a lot of information to spit out in a short amount of time, and it's a totally different position from corner. So he's got a lot of things to learn, but so far he's done pretty well."

Collins looks very sharp in practice Sunday as well. He seems to have lost weight since the spring, and it's helping him move around in coverage in the middle of the field. One play that stood out: Rueben Randle was running a short crossing route and pulled up when he saw/heard Collins closing on him. The pass fell incomplete, and Collins pumped his fists at his defensive teammates on the sideline.
