12.5kg of smuggled gold seized, 5 held
Rapid Action Battalion arrested five persons with 108 smuggled gold bars, weighing 12.5kg, worth around Tk 6.25 crore in the capital's Khilgaon on Saturday.
The gold bars were smuggled into the country through the domestic terminal of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, said Rab officials.
The arrestees are Syed Mahmud, 37, Forkan, 27, Meherunnesa, 45, Bibi Fatema, 30, and Shamsul Alam, 44.
Acting on a tip-off, a Rab team searched a private car, driven by Alam, near Khidmah Hospital at Khilgaon around 11:20am on the day and seized eight gold bars from Mahmud and Forkan, Lt Col Khandakar Golam Sarwar, commanding officer of Rab-3, told a press briefing at its Tikatuli headquarters yesterday.
Later, all the arrestees, who were in the car, were taken to Rab-3 headquarters where 100 gold bars were seized from Meherunnesa and Fatema, said Sarwar.
The Rab team also seized the private car, a laptop, four passports, nine cellphones and some foreign currencies from their possession.
During primary interrogation, the arrestees said they received the bars in a Biman flight while they were travelling to Dhaka from Chittagong.
An international passenger gave them the gold bars, the Rab official quoted the arrestees as saying.
