Flood-like situation reported in several districts of South Bengal

Kolkata, Aug 2 (UNI) Flood-like situation was reported today in several districts of South Bengal like Howrah, Hooghly, Burdwan, Bankura, South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore with the release of fresh water from the Durgapur barrage. At least 53,000, cusec of water was released from the barrage last night. The district administration has said since water has been released from the Durgapur barrage, various areas of Hoogly, including Khanakul, Arambag may be heavily flooded. The district administration has also kept rescue teams ready to tackle the flood situations. Also, adequate relief materials have been stocked. The Army has been called in to tackle the flood situation in the Burdwan district. Most of the rivers in the district are flowing near the danger level due which massive pressure has been created on the dams resulting in cracks in the dams. To tackle the situation the Army has been called in the Purbasthali area of Burdwan. In Ghatal in West Midnapore, boats were pressed into service. In Murshidabad's Andulia, a girl was carried away by a strong current and in Howrah's Panchla, rains triggered the collapse of a mud house leading to the death of a woman and injuring her husband. In Nadia, four deaths were reported by district administration officials while West Midnapore witnessed at least two fatalities. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has been taking measures to provide relief after over 18 hours of continuous pounding by torrential rain that started on Friday evening inundated vast areas of 12 districts, almost all of them in south Bengal, marooning over 18 lakh people.
