Heavy rains wreak havoc in Manipur, West Bengal and Odisha

There has been large scale devastation in Bengal. The flood situation in the southern parts of Bengal has turned grim. More than one lakh people are seeking shelter in relief camps.

Two days after cyclone Komen made a landfall in Bangladesh, heavy rains and floods have wreaked havoc in the eastern and north eastern states of India. Manipur, Odisha and West Bengal are the worst affected states.

There has been large scale devastation in Bengal. The flood situation in the southern parts of Bengal has turned grim. More than one lakh people are seeking shelter in relief camps. 48 people have died due to the floods.

And even as Bengal continues to reel under the heavy downpour, there is no respite in sight. The weather department has predicted more heavy rains in the next two days

Gujarat

The death toll due to heavy rainfall in Gujarat has risen to 53. On Saturday, four choppers from Ahmedabad, and one each from Jodhpur and Phalodi were called in for relief work in Banaskantha- in the wake of heavy rains leading to a flood like situation in the state. The NDRF has moved 21 search and rescue teams to the flood affected areas to assist the state administration in rescue and relief works.

Manipur

Endless rains have thrown life out of gear in Manipur. Normal life in the state has been affected by the incessant rains - 21 were killed after the heavy downpour triggered a landslide in Manipur's Khenjoy.

Odisha

Heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by gusty surface winds is likely to pound several places in south and north Odisha in the next 24 hours under the influence of a depression.

The depression over Bangladesh, which moved west-northwest and lay centered over the Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh today, would trigger rain and thundershower in most places in northern part of the state and many places in southern part too, MeT office said.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall in a few places in northern part and heavy rainfall would occur in one or two places in southern part of the state in the next 24 hours, it said.

Gusty surface winds with 45 to 55 kmph speed and gusting up to 65 kmph would hit the state coast. Sea condition would be rough to very rough. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea, it said.

Life has been thrown out of gear in several other states as well.

Incessant rains have triggered landslide in Himachal Pradesh's Dharmshala - destroying several houses and roads. In Jharkhand villages and houses have been completely submerged after the torrential downpour.

In Rajasthan too - heavy rains brought misery - with road and houses completely inundated.

There is no relief even for Jammu and Kashmir as the Met department has suggested that heavy rains may continue for few days.
