Tripura docs accuse govt of fooling MCI
Agartala: The government doctors of the state stopped private practice for an indefinite period from Saturday, accusing the state of fooling the Medical Council of India (MCI) to get recognition of courses in Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC).
They have alleged that almost all departments of AGMC have been running without proper infrastructure and basic facilities for over a decade now. The government had been making untrue statements and falsely showing senior government doctors as faculty members of AGMC.
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) and All Tripura Government Doctors’ Association (ATGDA) are unhappy with the state over its inaction to upgrade health care infrastructure. A government doctors’ association has alleged that instead of complying with the HC directive on better facilities in the hospitals and frame an appropriate rule for private practice of doctors, the health department has directed the doctors to submit individual affidavit in the court, which the doctors have refused.
“The doctors have stopped private practice from today (Saturday) to respect the HC order. IMA and ATGDA have separately sought clarification of the court order,” said IMA president Pradip Bhowmik.
The health department has changed OPD timings in all the government hospitals from Saturday. The new timings will be from 9 am to 4 pm instead of the existing 8 am to 1 pm. The revised scheduled is fixed in such a way that after attending OPD, senior doctors will be forced to be in the hospitals till 11 pm.
But the new timetable has not slotted time for the medics to teach in the medical college.
An MCI team, on its recent visit to AGMC, has found basic infrastructure problems and shortage of faculty members in the anesthesia, pediatric, and surgical departments. It has said if more people are not hired and infrastructure facilities are not upgraded in two months, the recognition of various courses will be cancelled.
