Campaign in school

Continuing its efforts to spread awareness against the spread of dengue by reaching out to schoolchildren, officials of the Tiruchirapalli City Corporation administered a pledge to about 1,000 students of Seva Sangam Girls Higher Secondary School in the city on Saturday. The students pledged to destroy all mosquito-breeding sources such as empty cans, containers, tyres, and pots in their houses. The students took the pledge in the presence of Rajeswari, City Health Officer.

‘Rollback bus

fare increase’

The Tamil Nadu Consumer Movement has appealed to the government to withdraw the indirect increase in bus fares effected by the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation by naming the bus services as Limited Stop Service. The fares of some services in routes such as Tiruchi-Vallam and Tiruchi-Viralimalai have been increased by Rs. 2 to Rs. 3 after naming the service LSS. Following such action, private bus operators too increase the fares, a resolution adopted at a meeting of the organisation said.

gets new chief

B. Padmanaban has assumed charge as Director of the National Research Centre for Banana (NRCB), Tiruchi. Mr. Padmanaban was appointed Director following the retirement of M.M. Mustaffa on Friday. Prior to this, Dr. Padmanaban was Principal Scientist (Agricultural Entomology). He has more than 30 years of research experience in crop protection of rice, vegetables, citrus, arecanut, coconut, coffee, and banana. He has more than 40 publications to his credit. He has been instrumental in developing a highly eco-friendly stem trap towards management of Banana weevils and developed an entomopathogenic control for weevil control. He is a recipient of Dr. Sithanatham, CHAI and INSA Fellowship awards, a NRCB press release said.

Training for

schoolgirls

Girls studying in classes 6, 7 and 8 in government schools in the district will be provided training in self-defence through the “Education for All” scheme, Collector K.S. Palanisamy said in a press release. Mr. Palanisamy said the training under Innovation Education would be given to 50 students from each schools and 1,000 girls would be trained. The training would be provided in capsules of one-and-a-half hours each twice every week for five months, he said.
