CHENNAI: Four men surrendered before a magistrate court in Tindivanam, 120km from Chennai, on Friday and claimed that police were searching for them in connection with the murder of a builder at a toll plaza on Thursday.
The court officials informed the Chengalpet police station about the surrender. They were identified as Mohan, 52, Vinod Kumar, 25, Arun Prabhu, 32, all hailing from Thiruvarur district, and Prem Kumar, 24 of Chengalpet.
Mohan is a lawyer.
The Chengalpet police, meanwhile, detained three more suspects – Chandru , Pandi and Valluvan – in connection with the murder. S Abhinesh Babu was killed by a three-member gang near the Chengalpet toll plaza on Thursday when he was going to Gingee.
Inquiries revealed that Babu gave a cheque 2.40 crore in favour of a woman for buying her land. He had asked Mohan to hand over the cheque to her. Mohan, however, pocketed the money. Babu had lodged a police complaint at CB-CID against Mohan.
Meanwhile, Mohan sent some hirelings to threaten Babu. As he lodged another complaint against him, Mohan decided to eliminate Babu, police said.
