ROSWELL, N.M. (AP) - A Roswell police officer is expected to recover after being shot by a drug suspect, who was subsequently killed by authorities.
Roswell police say they and the Chaves County Sheriff were assisting the FBI in a narcotics investigation Friday night when the shooting occurred.
Police spokesman Todd Wildermuth says officers were watching three people inside two vehicles in a Taco Bell parking lot for a possible drug deal.
Then one suspect shot at police, striking a narcotics officer. Multiple officers returned fire, killing the suspect.
The officer, whose name was not released, was treated at a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
Wildermuth says other suspects at the scene have been arrested.
Police are not releasing their names or the name of the dead suspect.
