Ambala-Chandigarh Highway: Woman, minor daughter killed in ‘hit-and-run’

A woman and her nine-year-old daughter were killed after their car collided with another on the Ambala-Chandigarh Highway, near Lalru, on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday.

Police identified the deceased as Kanchan, 30, and her daughter Simran, 9, who was travelling with her husband, Rinku Kumar, and his brother Yogesh’s family in an Alto. While Yogesh was driving the car, his brother, Rinku sat next to him. Yogesh’s wife Sanya, and their 11-year- old daughter, Tanya, were also in the car, apart from Rinku’s wife, Kanchan, and their daughter, Simran. The two families reside in Trivedi Camp in Dera Bassi.

The incident was reported around 1.30 am on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday, when they were on their way back home after attending a wedding in Shahbad in Kurukshetra district.

The police said when their car reached Sarsini village, a speeding Swift Dzire tried to overtake it and the accident took place.

“The impact was such that the Alto veered off the road and fell down the embankment. Rinku’s wife Kanchan and their daughter, Simran, suffered serious head injuries and were taken to Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, Chandigarh, where they were declared dead on arrival. The other family members were admitted to the hospital,” said Gurjit Singh, Station House Officer (SHO), Lalru police station.

Rinku, Yogesh and Sanya were discharged on Saturday, while Tanya is still admitted in the hospital. Her condition was stable, the police said.

The driver of Swift Dzire is yet to be identified as police sources said that although the driver stopped after the accident, he sped away after a few minutes.

The police have noted the registration number of the car. “He will be traced soon. He has been booked for causing death due to negligence,” said Singh.
