Kakinada: Citizens to get power from garbage soon

Singapore companies keen to invest in waste plants
Kakinada: The garbage problem in two municipal corporations and seven municipalities in East Godavari district will be addressed as garbage-based power plants would be set up soon.
The Singapore-based companies are keen to set up 150 MW power plants by using of 800 tonnes of domestic waste, while the Godavari Knowledge Society is planning to set up 10 MW plant at Chendurthi village in Gollaprolu mandal by taking garbage from six municipalities and Kakinada Municipal Corporation (KMC) as raw material.
According to officials, the state government will invite tenders on August 17 for the plants. The KMC acquired 25 acres of land at Chendurthi village in Gollaprolu mandal for compost yard for Kakinada city, but villagers strongly opposed the move and didn't to allow the KMC sanitation tractors in to the village to dump the garbage in the site. The issue remained unsolved for the past three years.
Meanwhile, several entrepreneurs are coming forward to set up power plants by making use of garbage in the cities and KMC officials showed them site at Chendurthi.
“The compost yard problem can be solved, if the power plants are established in the vicinity of the municipalities and municipal corporation. At least 10 acres are required for compost yard,” said KMC commissioner S. Govinda Swamy.
For power plant at Chendurthi, the companies will take garbage from the municipalities from Peddapuram, Samalkot, Pithapuram, gollaprolu, Eleswaram and also Kakinda. Mr Swamy said that the plastic waste will also be used in power generation and thus plastic menace can also be solved.
About 220 tonnes of garbage is generated in Kakinada municipal corporation limits and 180 tonnes of garbage could be used to generate electricity. Earlier, officials used to burn the garbage which led to pollution. However, the latest technology helps remove all the pollutants produced during the power generation.
Special filters remove dangerous chemicals and particles that are normally found in the fumes. Local people need not worry about the pollution due to the garbage, said an official.
